Community Medicine (PSM) · Immunization and Vaccines (Cold Chain, NIS Schedule, Open Vial Policy)

India introduced HPV vaccine (Cervavac — quadrivalent, indigenous) into the Universal Immunization Programme in 2023. The recommended schedule is:

  • A Three doses at 0, 1, 6 months for all adolescents aged 9–26 years
  • B Single dose for girls aged 9–14 years who have not been previously vaccinated
  • C Two doses at 0 and 12 months for girls aged 9–14 years
  • D Two doses at 0 and 6 months for girls aged 9–14 years
Correct answer: D. Two doses at 0 and 6 months for girls aged 9–14 years

Explanation

India's UIP introduced Cervavac (Serum Institute's quadrivalent HPV vaccine targeting HPV 6, 11, 16, 18) in 2023 for girls aged 9–14 years in a two-dose schedule at 0 and 6 months. This is consistent with WHO's recommendation for a two-dose schedule in girls under 15 (0 and 6 months, minimum interval 5 months). For girls aged 15 and above, or immunocompromised individuals, a 3-dose schedule (0, 1–2, 6 months) is recommended. The single-dose approach is being studied but is not yet the official GoI/WHO schedule.
