Anatomy · Lower Limb Anatomy (Nerves, Vessels, Joints)

The deep peroneal nerve (deep fibular nerve) enters the anterior compartment of the leg by passing through the anterior intermuscular septum. Its terminal branches in the foot supply:

  • A Skin of the sole and intrinsic muscles of the foot
  • B Entire dorsum of the foot
  • C Tibialis anterior and peroneus longus muscles
  • D Skin of the first web space and the extensor digitorum brevis
Correct answer: D. Skin of the first web space and the extensor digitorum brevis

Explanation

The deep peroneal nerve supplies all muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg (tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, peroneus tertius) and in the foot supplies the extensor digitorum brevis (and extensor hallucis brevis). Its cutaneous territory is limited to the first dorsal web space (skin between the first and second toes). The superficial peroneal nerve supplies most of the dorsum of the foot. The sole of the foot is supplied by the medial and lateral plantar nerves (from the tibial nerve).
